An Appreciation of Costume Designers
Quite possibly one of the unsung heroes of the entertainment industry, or more accurately, one of the most important contributions to a production whether it’s a movie, TV show, or live performance, the costumes are an integral part of the performance. The costume helps the character come to life so that we can image.
It’s not an easy job either, a lot of research and work goes into the job. You have to be historically and culturally accurate if you’re doing a period drama. You have to consider the character from the script. Is your character a warrior? An elegant lady? A biker? Is your character flamboyant and outgoing? Are they sullen and quiet? Patterns, fabrics, and colors can speak volumes about a person.
The results of their hard labor can be beautiful:

A really great costume designer can capture the story’s world and inspire modern fashion, like the fashion of Mad Men. The costume designer can bring little bits of magic to the production and we love them for it.
